Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 Postponed – International Olympic Committee (IOC)

Unic Press UK: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has postponed the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in light of the current global health crisis – massive number of deaths and infections resulting from the spread of a coronavirus SARS-Cov-2, which causes a killer disease known as COVID-19.

The IOC President, Thoma Bach, who spoke to the international news agencies during a media teleconference on Tuesday said:

“…we agreed, given these circumstances, on the following: that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo and the Paralympic Games, must be rescheduled to a later date beyond 2020, but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, and everybody involved in the Olympic Games, and the international community. We also agreed that the Olympic flame will stay in Japan, as a symbol of our commitment, and also as a symbol of hope. We will also keep, for these symbolic reasons, the name Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.” 

Coronavirus SARS-Cov-2 has been spreading like wildfire, causing the deaths of many since December 2019 when it surfaced in Wuhan Province, China.

In the UK, 8,077 tested positive for coronavirus, with 422 deaths as of the report Tuesday.

In the U.S., the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention report Tuesday notes that in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and US Virgin Islands, there are 44,183 confirmed cases and 544 deaths.

As at 22 March, circa 5,000 confirmed dead in Italy. Iran’s figure is more that 1,500 deaths. These figures have since increased rapidly.
