High Court Grants Shia Cleric, El Zakzaky, Leave To Travel Abroad For Medical Purposes

Unic Press UK: Judge Darius Khobo of the Kaduna High Court has granted an application allowing the leader of the now proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), Ibrahim El Zakzaky, and his spouse Zeenat to travel to the oversee for medical examination/treatment.

In a statement Monday, the State Director of Public Prosecution, Dari Bayero said:

“The context of the court ruling is that Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife are granted leave to travel out for urgent medical attention. The court looked through the medical reports filed, and believed Mallam is indeed in dire need of medical attention. This is not a bail, but a leave to travel. So, as soon as his discharge from the hospital and he returns to the country, his trial will resume,” the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

My Bayero added that the prosecution team has yet to make a decision on whether to appeal the decision of the Kaduna High Court.

Last month July, the Nigerian government banned the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), a Shi’ite Muslim group, following persistent protests by the group over the detention of its leader, Ibrahim El Zakzaky, who has been in a prison custody since December 2015 despite several Court orders for his release.
