Boko Haram mayhem: UN assistance rejected

Nigeria’s national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki, told the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) that the Nigerian government does not need the assistance of troops of the African Union (AU) or the United Nations (UN) to fight, defeat notorious Boko Haram sect, despite acknowledging that the sect is a real threat to security.

Boko Haram was founded in 2002. Boko signifies western education. Haram denotes forbidden.

Boko Haram therefore implies that western education is forbidden. It commenced military operations in 2009 aiming to create Islamic state. In one of its implacable mission, the sect abducted about 200 school girls. Recently they invaded Baga [town in northeastern Nigeria]. There are several reports stating that as many as 2000 people were killed in Baga, but the Nigerian government has put the figure at 150.

On the basis of the outcome of our investigations on happenings in Nigeria, especially on the activities of Boko Haram and the responses of the Nigerian military, it appears that the terrorist group does not meet robust resistance from the Nigeria military during some of its gory operations. Besides, several soldiers have complained about poor weapons, ‘non-existent’ welfare, and poor medical assistance to their colleagues injured in the course of confronting Boko Haram, a terrorist group.

Despite apparent low morale among soldiers in northeastern Nigeria, Major General Chris Olukolade, Director of Defence Information, released a statement that the military is now prepared to commence a robust and comprehensive operation to obliterate Boko Haram.
