George Floyd: Former Police Officer Derek Chauvin Charged With Murder & Manslaughter

Unic Press UK: A former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, is in police custody; and has been charged with murder and manslaughter over the death Monday of a black American man George Floyd, the Hennepin County Attorney.

At this moment, what we know is that Chauvin would face a charge of 3rd-degree murder. There might be further charges when the evidence before the County Attorney is fully considered.

The peace of the city of Minneapolis was shattered on Monday after a video of the apparent murder of Floyd, 46, went viral. In the video, one could see a firmly restrained Floyd lying on the ground, pinned to the ground as the left knee of a police officer held his neck in what appears to be a deliberate 8-minute chokehold aimed to suffocate him.

In the course of the incident, Floyd, who had been shackled with handcuffs all through the chokehold is heard on the video groaning: “Please, I can’t breathe” and “don’t kill me”. The four police officers involved during the incident prevented desperate calls by members of the public that Chauvin take his knee off Floyd’s neck. Tragically, Floyd died.
