Nigeria Moves To Ban Production Of Plastics

Unic Press UK: In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment, the upper chamber of Nigeria’s bicameral legislative body, the Senate, is moving towards the having in place a law that prohibits the production of plastic in the country, the Voice of Nigeria reports.

A member of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, Senator Tolulope Odebiyi, who drafted a Bill to prohibit the production of plastic in Nigeria, spoke in Lagos during the launch of the Maritime Action Plan. He said: “I drafted the Bill with regard to plastic pollution and the proliferation of plastics in the country. The issue is getting to an alarming state. I am happy the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has taken the lead in ensuring that our waterways and all our water bodies are clean, safe, and a vital source of economic activity for us in this country.”

In his statement, the Director-General of NIMASA, Dakuku Peterside said it is vital to eschew actions that generate pollution, clog the waterways, and cause erosion/flooding.
