Nigeria Closes Land Borders Over Smuggling – Nigerian Customs Service

Unic Press UK: As part of measures it claims would curb smuggling of goods into the country, the Nigeria Customs Service has shut land borders, the comptroller-general of the Nigeria Customs Service, Hameed Ali said.

“All goods for now are banned from being exported or imported through our land borders and that is to ensure we have total control over what comes in. We are strategising on how best the goods can be handled when we eventually get to the point where this operation will relax for the influx of goods,” Ali said on Monday in Abuja while addressing the media.

Prior to its decision Monday, last August, the Nigerian government had ordered a partial shutdown of the land border between its shores and Benin over what it described as measures to curb smuggling of rice and other food items.
