Boris Johnson Elected Tory Leader, Becomes New Prime Minister On Wednesday

Unic Press UK: A former Mayor of London, Boris Johnson has been elected as Conservatives Party (Tory) leader; and would assume the office of the United Kingdom Prime Minister on Wednesday, the 23 July 2019.

Boris Johnson garnered 92,153 votes, which is 66% of the total valid votes, to defeat Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, who had 46,656 or 33% of the valid votes. The turnout of voters was 87.4% with 159,320 being the total number of eligible voters.

The new Tory leader, who had traversed 4 nations, circa 8000 miles, participated in 16 regional hustings and hundreds of members’ events across the UK, in the course of his campaign for the Conservative Party leadership election, says in his victory speech that the mission if to deliver Brexit by 31st October, unite our country, and defeat Corbyn.

“I think we know that we can do it and that the people of this country are trusting in us to do it and we know that we will do it,” Boris said. “We are going to energize the country,” he added.

It was on May 24, 2019 that Theresa May announced that she way be stepping down as Leader of the Conservatives Party and UK Prime Minister after failing to convince the Members of Parliament (MPs) to accept her Brexit deal; and her decision to quit triggered a leadership contest that just culminated in the election of a new leader of the Conservatives Party.
