Sir Kim Darroch, UK Ambassador To U.S. Resigns Over Leaked Diplomatic Cables

Unic Press UK: The UK ambassador to the U.S., Sir Kim Darroch resigned today over a series of leaked diplomatic cables, in which, Darroch impugned Trump, describing the United States president Donald Trump as ‘inept’, ‘insecure’ and ‘incompetent’.

From the leaked information, Darroch also said: ‘As seen from here, we really don’t believe that this [U.S.] Administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional, less unpredictable, less faction-riven, less diplomatically clumsy and inept.’

In a letter to the UK Foreign Office, Sir Kim said: “The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like,” the BBC News reports.

The full text of Sir Kim’s letter to he Permanent Under-Secretary, Foreign & Commonwealth Office, & Head of HM Diplomatic Service, Sir Simon McDonald, reads:

“Since the leak of official documents from this Embassy there has been a great deal of speculation surrounding my position and the duration of my remaining term as ambassador. I want to put an end to that speculation. The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like.

“Although my posting is not due to end until the end of this year, I believe in the current circumstances the responsible course is to allow the appointment of a new ambassador.

“I am grateful to all those in the UK and the US, who have offered their support during this difficult few days. This has brought home to me the depth of friendship and close ties between our two countries. I have been deeply touched.

“I am also grateful to all those with whom I have worked over the last four decades, particularly my team here in the US. The professionalism and integrity of the British civil service is the envy of the world. I will leave it full of confidence that its values remain in safe hands.”

In a response via Twitter, Sir Simon McDonald said:

Prior to his resignation, President Trump had said “we will no longer deal with him.” Trump seems very furious with the UK establishment since the leaked diplomatic cables were published by the Mail on Sunday.

Trump on Twitter: “I have been very critical about the way the U.K. and Prime Minister Theresa May handled Brexit. What a mess she and her representatives have created. I told her how it should be done, but she decided to go another way. I do not know the Ambassador, but he is not liked or well thought of within the U.S. We will no longer deal with him. The good news for the wonderful United Kingdom is that they will soon have a new Prime Minister. While I thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent State Visit last month, it was the Queen who I was most impressed with!”
