UK Says Golan Heights Still Syrian Territory

Unic Press UK: The United Kingdom Foreign Office has issued a statement apropos the United States government recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli territory.

In its statement published Friday on its website on https://www.gov.uk/government/news/uk-statement-on-the-golan-heights the UK government said:

“The UK views the Golan Heights as territory occupied by Israel. Annexation of territory by force is prohibited under international law, including the UN Charter. We did not recognise Israel’s annexation in 1981 and have no plans to change our position.”

In its reaction, the Syrian government insists that the Golan Heights is an integral part of its territory; and that reclaiming it (Golan Heights) via legal means and international law is a priority of the Syrian government. Speaking during an interview Friday with Al Mayadeen TV, the Syrian Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Fayssal Mikdad said that the U.S. president Donald Trump’s position on the Golan Heights is a violation of the UN Charter and principles, including the Security Council resolution no. 497 of 1981 that the Golan is occupied territory.

It was on Thursday that the U.S. president Donald Trump said that his government would recognize the Israeli government sovereignty over the Golan Heights – a disputed area. though ‘appropriated’ by Israel from Syria in 1967.
