PDP’s Atiku Abubakar To Consider Amnesty For Corruption Suspects

Unic Press UK: The presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar said Wednesday that, if elected as Nigerian president, his government would tackle corruption cases via an amnesty for suspects – individuals and corporate entities – that return stolen public assets.

Speaking during a town hall meeting, aired live on TV, and attended by the PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and the vice presidential candidate Peter Obi, the former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku said:

“If you are to go and be prosecuting these people, you will still be prosecuting them and will not get the money.”

In 2011, the 4th Joint African Union Commission/United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (AUC/ECA) Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development mandated the ECA to establish the High Level Panel on Illicit Financial Flows from Africa. At the end of its work, the panel reported that, from 1970 to 2008, the cumulative illicit financial flows in Nigeria peaked at $217.7 billion.
