Zamfara Killings: Gov Yari Supports State Of Emergency; Senate President, Saraki Weighs In

Unic Press UK: Following the seeming intractable killing of the innocents in parts of Zamfara state of Nigeria, the state governor Abdulaziz Yari has welcomed the calls by many for a state of emergency to be declared.

Yari said:

“I am also in support of the declaration of state of emergency if it will save the lives of people of the state. We are talking about the lives of our people and this needs the coming together of all, so that the crisis can end. If the provisions of my office had allowed me to carry arms against the bandits, l would have done so,” the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

Through his Twitter account, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki decried the persistent killings, and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to take effective action to end the ongoing atrocities against the populace of Zamfara. He said:

“The situation in Zamfara State is an example of why we need to overhaul our security architecture in order to bring it to a state where it can effectively tackle emerging threats and challenges. Mr. President has to take full & direct control. Mr. President must widen the consultation within the armed forces on the search for solutions to the Zamfara killings. He must go beyond the first line military top brass. We need to get ideas from more sources than we presently do. Just as we also flayed the pre-2015 government, the situation in Zamfara presents a picture of the government denying the citizens their fundamental rights to life and rights to own property. The government must correct this by stopping the carnage in Zamfara immediately.”

In the last two weeks, the local media have reported several cases of killings in Zamfara State. The most recent being the killings Saturday, when hoodlums attacked parts of Maradun Local Government Area (LGA) of Zamfara State.
