PM Theresa May Could Face A Leadership Challenge Over Brexit

Unic Press UK: The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May could face a leadership challenge in the coming days or weeks if it turns out that the 48-letter threshold from 48 Members of Parliament (MP) of the Conservative Party fold is reached.

In the Conservative Party, there’s a rule that 48 MP’s should write to the chairman of the 1922 Committee before a confidence vote is triggered.

May has faced a barrage of criticism after her government reached a contentious deal with the European Union (EU) on the terms and conditions for the UK’s planned exit from the EU. A majority of the MP’s across party lines has condemned the deal though.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister called off a scheduled crucial vote on the Brexit deal her government had reached with the EU, and raced to Brussels thereafter, hoping to initiate a renegotiation of the terms and conditions.

It was on June 23, 2016 that the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union with 51.8% [more than 17.4 million of the total votes]. Thereafter, on March 29, 2017, the UK Prime Minister, Theresa May inked a letter, which triggered Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, thereby formally declaring that the UK would exit the EU.

On Monday, the Court of Justice of the European Union delivered a landmark ruling, saying that the United Kingdom has the rights to unilaterally revoke the notification to exit the European Union (EU).

“When a member state has notified European Council of its intention to withdraw from the European Union, as the U.K. has done, that member state is free to revoke unilaterally that notification,” a Press Release by the Court of Justice of the European Union on December 10, 2018 reads.
