Yemen War: UN-Backed Peace Talk Begin In Sweden

Unic Press UK: A peace talk between the warring sides in the Yemen War has kicked-off today, Thursday, with the representatives of the various parties sitting face-to-face, and hoping to bring to a denouement the circa 4-year war that has caused colossal destruction of lives/properties.

The peace talk opened in Rimbo, Stockholm County, Sweden, with an address by the Swedish foreign minister, Margot Wallstrom, who wished the warring groups’ strength to find “compromise and courage”, the UN News Centre reported.

The Yemeni War started in 2015, escalating thereafter following a Saudi-led military force entered the strafed country, intervening against a Houthi rebel insurgency.

In a briefing to the Security Council on October 23, 2018, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Mark Lowcock  said that circa 14 million people in Yemen, or a half the country’s population are facing “pre-famine conditions.

“Only half of health facilities are functioning, and many Yemenis are too poor to access the ones that are open. Unable to reach care, people often die at home. Very few families report these deaths; their stories go unrecorded,” he added.

According to the United Nations https://news.un.org/en/story/2018/02/1003692 over three-fourths of the 22 million populace in Yemen are in need of humanitarian assistance or protection, and over 8 million are severely food insecure and at risk of starvation.
