Former Delta State Governor James Ibori Loses Appeal In UK

Unic Press UK: The former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, who had served a jail sentence in the United Kingdom for laundering millions of pounds through British banks, has lost an appeal against his conviction, the news agency Reuters reports.

Mr Ibori, who was jailed in 2012 for £50 million [or ₦23.8 billion at the current exchange rate] after pleading guilty to 10 counts of fraud and money-laundering, had appealed against the lower court’s judgement, alleging that the judicial process which led to his conviction was flawed by the misconduct of the British police and prosecutors.

In December 2016, Ibori, who currently resides in Nigeria after serving circa half of a 13-year jail term in the UK, was released from jail.

In May 2017 he was awarded £1 for being unlawfully detained for 42 hours in the UK.
