Former DR Congo Veep Sentenced To Jail & Fined By International Criminal Court

Unic Press UK: In a fresh ruling Monday, the International Criminal Court (“ICC” or “Court”) sentenced a former Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) vice president Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo to one year imprisonment’ and fined the convict EUR 300,000 over offences against the administration of justice –  a crime specifically related to witness tampering and soliciting false testimonies of defence witnesses.

Also convicted were Aimé Kilolo Musamba and Jean-Jacques Mangenda Kabongo

This judgement follows “the ICC Appeals Chamber Judgment that had reversed the initial sentences against them and remanded the matter to Trial Chamber VII for a new determination,” the ICC said.

In its ruling yesterday, the Court ordered that the length of time already spent in jail has to be factored in, in other words, deducted from the new sentence of 12-month time passed on Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo; while the fine should be settled within 3 months of its decision and the money transferred to the Trust Fund for Victims.
