“I was playing at my limit almost all the time, looking for winners. But couldn’t make them because Novak was there almost every time. I took the risks with my forehand because it was the only way to beat this kind of player. My mistakes were because of his level. Novak is too fast. His defence is good. It is really difficult to beat a player like Novak,” said Juan Martin del Potro.

In the women’s category, Naomi Osaka won her match against Serena Williams, 6-2 6-4, emerging as the first Japanese to win a singles Grand Slam.

Serena accused the umpire of sexism after she was accused of receiving instructions from her coach. There was a penalty point against her for racquet abuse – striking her racquet on the floor.
