Kremlin: Nord Stream 2 Would Not Make Germany Dependent On Russia

MOSCOW, July 12. /TASS/. The Kremlin is confident that Nord Stream 2 will not make Germany dependent on Russia. On the contrary, it will become guarantor of stability, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, commenting on the statements made by President of the United States Donald Trump.

“As for Germany’s dependence as a major buyer of our gas – we cannot agree with this, because such deliveries of pipeline gas do not lead to the dependence of one country on another, but to complete mutual dependence,” Peskov stressed. “This guarantees stability and further development of mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields,” he added.

The Kremlin considers US President Donald Trump’s criticism of the Nord Stream 2 project as America seeking to promote its liquefied natural gas, which is disadvantageous to Europe.

“As for attempts to organize various attacks on this commercial project (Nord Stream 2 – TASS), we have said before that we consider this to be a manifestation of unfair competition,” Peskov said. “This is nothing more than an attempt to force European buyers to acquire more expensive liquefied gas, which can be supplied from alternative places,” he added.

Peskov noted that, from the point of view of costs and final costs, pipe gas “has very few alternative sources.”

Since his arrival on Tuesday to Brussels for the NATO summit, Trump has already criticized several times those members of the Alliance who participate in the Nord Stream 2 project. Thus, talking to reporters, he sharply criticized Germany in particular, calling it Russia’s “captive”.
