Rex Tillerson: U.S. Communicating With North Korea Despite Tensions

Unic Press UK: Despite the acrimony between the United States and the Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea (North Korea), both countries have direct lines of communication, the U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters in Beijing.

Tillerson, who is on official tour of the Peoples’ Republic of China, said:

“We ask, ‘Would you like to talk?’ We have lines of communications to Pyongyang. We’re not in a dark situation or a blackout. We have a couple of direct channels to Pyongyang. We can talk to them. We do talk to them. Directly, through our own channels.” (Tillerson: 30th September 2017)

Pyongyang is unlikely to engage in talks that will lead to denuclearization of its nuclear assets, a former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, said a few months’ ago. “I’d love to see it, but I don’t think that’s in the cards,” Clapper said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

North Korea has made perceptible strides in its development of nuclear weapons. In 2016, Pyongyang carried out its fourth and fifth nuclear tests, recording successful detonations on each occasion. On 3rd September 2017, the communist State successfully executed its sixth nuclear test, which is said to be five times more powerful than the nuclear bomb dropped on Nagasaki by the US.
