U.S. Destroyer Accident: Remains Of Some Missing Sailors Have Been Located – U.S. Navy

Unic Press UK: The U.S. Navy says the remains of some of the 10 sailors that were declared missing when the guided-missile destroyer, USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) collided with the merchant vessel Alnic MC [“a Liberian-flagged 600-foot oil and chemical tanker with a gross tonnage of 30,000”] at circa 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time (JST) on Saturday, the 21st August 2017, have been located.

The collision between the guided-missile destroyer, USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) and the merchant vessel Alnic MC [“a Liberian-flagged 600-foot oil and chemical tanker with a gross tonnage of 30,000”] happened at circa 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time (JST) on Saturday, the 21st August 2017, as the U.S. destroyer sailed east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.

10 sailors were declared missing, fire injured when the collision happened. None of the five injured is currently facing life-threatening injuries. Four injured were medically transferred to a hospital in Singapore soon afterwards. The other injured person does not require further medical attention.

The U.S. Navy confirmed that a search and rescue is currently underway – with “tug boats out of Singapore, RSN Fearless-class patrol ships RSS Gallant (97), RSS Resilience (82), RSN helicopters and Singaporean Police Coast Guard vessel Basking Shark (55)” – in coordination with local authorities.

The incident will be investigated, the U.S. Navy said.
