Unic Press UK: The guided-missile destroyer, USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) collided with the merchant vessel Alnic MC [“a Liberian-flagged 600-foot oil and chemical tanker with a gross tonnage of 30,000”] at circa 6:24 a.m. Japan Standard Time (JST) as it sailed east of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, said the U.S. Navy in a statement.
10 sailors were declared missing, fire injured when the collision happened. None of the five injured is currently facing life-threatening injuries. Four injured were medically transferred to a hospital in Singapore. The other injured person does not require further medical attention.
The U.S. Navy confirmed that a search and rescue is currently underway – with “tug boats out of Singapore, RSN Fearless-class patrol ships RSS Gallant (97), RSS Resilience (82), RSN helicopters and Singaporean Police Coast Guard vessel Basking Shark (55)” – in coordination with local authorities.
The incident will be investigated, the U.S. Navy said.
