Unic Press UK: The United Nations Security Council today passed a Resolution, which imposed another round of sanctions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) in response to the country’s unbridled test of ballistic missiles, especially missiles of “intercontinental” range.
In adopting Resolution 2371 (2017) under Article 41, Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the 15-nation Council decided that:
- “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea shall not supply, sell or transfer coal, iron, iron ore, seafood, lead and lead ore to other countries.”
Resolution 2371 (2017) also:
- Placed a ban on cooperative entities or new joint ventures with North Korea entities or individuals.
- Prohibited all countries from increasing the total number of work authorizations for North Korean nationals in their jurisdictions, unless approved by the Security Council Committee established pursuant to Resolution 1718 (2006).
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres had on 28th July 2017, condemned the launch of a ballistic missile by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), reiterating his earlier call for DPRK leadership to engage the Republic of Korea’s government in dialogue by reopening communication channels to mitigate risks and reduce tensions in the Korean peninsula. In a message issued on his behalf by his spokesman, António Guterres said:
“This is again a manifest violation of Security Council resolutions. The DPRK leadership must comply fully with its international obligations and work together with the international community to resolve the outstanding issues on the Korean Peninsula”
