UN Boss Guterres Kickoff Middle East Tour: Meets President Erdogan, Others

Unic Press UK: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is presently on a tour of the Middle East. His itinerary included visits to Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

On Saturday, the 11th February 2017, Guterres had a parley with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, discussing a series of issues affecting the Middle East, including the Syrian conflict.

At a meeting with Erdogan, “the Secretary-General underscored the need to fight terrorism and extremists in Syria, but that effort would not be successful without a political solution supported by the people of country,” the UN News Centre said. The UN boss expressed the importance of liberating the cities presently under the control of Daesh (Islamic State), adding that political solution should be a part of the mix in solving the conflict in Syria.

In Saudi Arabia, on Sunday, Guterres reiterated the need for a comprehensive political dimension to solving the crises in Syria, Yemen, Libya, Iraq. “We have had the opportunity to have very important discussions and very constructive discussions in relation to the possible future political solutions for Yemen, for Libya,” the UN chief said.

António Guterres, sixty-seven-years-old, became the UN Secretary General on 1st January 2017.
