Nigeria Police Say Judges Are Under Investigation for Corruption

Bloomberg: Nigeria’s state police are investigating federal judges for corruption following public complaints about rulings allegedly issued “on the basis of money paid,” a spokesman said.

More than $870,000 in local and foreign notes was found in raids of the homes of three unidentified judges who lived “expensive and luxurious lifestyles,” Abdullahi Garba, a spokesman for the Department of State Services, said Saturday in an e-mail. “These operations were based on allegations of corruption and other acts of professional misconduct by a few of the suspected judges,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari, 73, a former general and military ruler elected on an anti-corruption platform, has focused on the judiciary after beginning investigations into the mismanagement of as much as $5.5 billion of military funds under the past government.

Some of the judges have made statements to investigators, while others declined, according to the statement. Neither the number of judges nor their names were released by the police. The judges will be arraigned in court, Garba said.
