Akwa Ibom Secures Licences For Jetty, 3 Refineries

Leadership / Nigeria: Government of Akwa Ibom has secured a Federal Government licence to construct new international jetty at Ikot Abasi, which is expected to resolve the perennial fuel scarcity and help boost maritime business in the state.

The state also plans to build three refineries.

The state’s chairman of Petroleum Monitoring Committee, Mr Essien Esema, who disclosed this to newsmen in Uyo at the weekend, said “the Federal Government has given Akwa Ibom licence to construct an international jetty in Ikot Abasi; that is a major milestone and breakthrough for the state.

“You need an international jetty first of all to get vessels to come and berth ferries conveying petroleum products in the state”, Mr Esema argued.

“We never had one in the state before, but Governor Udom Emmanuel has secured license for us to have an international jetty now”.

Esema, who is also the Senior Special Adviser to Governor Emmanuel, said plans are on to build three refineries in the state in order to curb fuel scarcity.

The special adviser frowned at illegal refineries in the state and urged concerned persons to regularize their operations with the government.

He also called on oil marketers to get permit or the license to operate before they start the business and appealed to youths in the Niger Delta to stop vandalism of oil pipelines.
