YENAGOA, Federal Republic of Nigeria. (Unic Press UK) — The present governor of Bayelsa state and gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Seriake Dickson, has been re-elected as governor of Bayelsa state given the outcome of the election in Southern Ijaw, which was held on Saturday, 9 January 2016.
INEC said that Seriake Dickson won the election after the Southern Ijaw results was announced having received 134,998 votes to defeat his main rival Temipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who received only 86,852 votes.
The gubernatorial election in Bayelsa state was initially held on 5 December 2015, but the results in Southern Ijaw was cancelled on 7 December 2015 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) due to “widespread violence, ballot box snatching and abduction of electoral official”. Sequel to the cancellation on 7 December, INEC held a consultative meeting with leaders of political parties, and they all agreed that the election in Southern Ijaw and other Polling Units be held on Saturday, 9 January 2016.
