N19.2bn Scam: Former Governor Timipre Sylva’s Trial Resumes

LAGOS, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The trial of a former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, over an alleged N19.2 billion scam, is resuming today at a Federal High Court, Abuja.

He is standing trial before Justice Ahmed Mohammed. 

The former governor is leading one of the transition committees of the president-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari.

His committee is having an interface with the committee put in place by President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure a smooth transition.

He was charged by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly laundering the said amount.

The prosecution accused Sylva of using three companies to commit the offences between 2009 and 2012 as governor of Bayelsa.

The companies are Marlin Maritime Limited, Eat Catering Services Limited and Haloween-Blue Construction and Logistics Limited.

Others charged alongside with Sylva are Francis Okoburo, Gbenga S. Balogun and Samuel Ogbuku.

A 42-count charge of money laundering was preferred against them.
