Malawi: Supreme Court Of Appeal Upholds Invalidation Of Presidential Election 2019

Unic Press UK: The Supreme Court of Appeal, the apex court in Malawi, has ruled that Peter Mutharika was not duly elected during the presidential election held in May 2019 in light of incontrovertible evidence of massive poll irregularities.

In its ruling, which upholds the Constitutional Court’s nullification of the election results as prayed by the opposition parties, the Supreme Court described the degree of poll manipulation as serious and troubling, the BBC reports.

What happens next is that the Malawi Electoral Commission would conduct a fresh election on 2 July 2020.

The presidential race would be between Peter Mutharika, Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party and Saulos Chilima of the United Transformation Movement.
