George Weah, Football Legend, Elected Liberian President

Unic Press UK: George Weah, 51-year-old, football legend, who won the African, European and world footballer of the year in 1995, has won the 2017 Liberian Presidential Election, given the results so far declared by the Presidential Run-off Election that was held on 26th December 2017.

Based on the results announced today by the country’s National Elections Commission (NEC), George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change has already garnered 720,023 or 61.5% of the votes in 5,286 of 5,390 (98.1%) of the polling places, while Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party (UP) had only 451,088 or 38.5%. Boakai is the current vice president of Liberia.

Weah won the first round of the presidential election, which was held in October 2017, with circa 38% of the total votes. Boakai 28.8% placed him on the second position. In the absence of a candidate with outright majority, the electoral body organized the Presidential Run-off Election.
