ABUJA, Federal Republic of Nigeria. Senate President Bukola Saraki has confirmed that the list of Ministers nominated by the executive arm of government has been delivered to the Senate.
The initial confirmation, which was purveyed via the Facebook account of Senator Saraki, reads: I received the list of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees from the Chief of Staff to Mr. President, Abba Kyari, and the Special Adviser to Mr. President on National Assembly (Senate) Ita Enang.
President Buhari in his article “Nigeria committed to good governance and fighting terror”, which was published by the Washington Post on Monday, 20 July 2015, said: “When cabinet ministers are appointed in September, it will be some months after I took the oath of office. It is worth noting that Obama himself did not have his full Cabinet in place for several months after first taking office; the United States did not cease to function in the interim. In Nigeria’s case, it would neither be prudent nor serve the interests of sound government to have made these appointments immediately on my elevation to the presidency; instead, Nigeria must first put new rules of conduct and good governance in place.”
Given that the list was submitted on the last day of September, and the Senate will convene in October, it is now clear that Buhari government could not meet their deadline as the Senate will be unable to screen any of the nominees before October 2015.
