AU Mourns The Passing Away Of Idriss Déby, President Of The Republic Of Chad

Unic Press UK: The African Union has issued a statement on the death of Idriss Déby, who was killed Tuesday by rebels operating in the Republic of Chad.

In a statement, the AU said:

“The African Union expresses its deepest condolences to the family and the people of The Republic of Chad following the untimely passing of H.E. President Idriss Déby.

The late President Déby played a key role in promoting the African Union’s Agenda to promote peace and security and was an ardent supporter of the Union’s efforts to create an environment of security and stability, especially within the Sahel region.

The African Union stands in solidarity with the Government and People of the Republic of Chad during this difficult time and joins them in mourning the loss of a champion of Africa’s endeavours to provide a peaceful, secure and stable continent.

May his soul rest in peace.”

Idriss Déby, who until his death was the President of Chad was killed in a clash between the country’s army and rebels at the border as he visited the strafed area. The 68 year-old has been the country’s leader since 1990.

The son of the former president, Lt Gen Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, is the new leader of Chad, heading a 15-member Transitional Military Council (CMT) that will oversee the country’s affairs for the next 18 months.
