ABUJA, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The plot to remove national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, is set to move to the states, as those behind the plot commence moves to woo influential members across the zones.
It was learnt at the weekend that the forces against Mu’azu crystallised following the crushing defeat of the party at the general election.
Those against Mu’azu’s leadership are of the view that the former governor of Bauchi State failed to provide leadership at the critical stage of the election, leading to what was regarded as a scandalous defeat in his home state.
Insiders in the party told the Nigerian Tribune at the weekend that the push to oust the chairman and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) took a frenetic dimension last week, following a meeting in Abuja.
Those at the meeting were said to have agreed on the setting up of a team to go round the states and woo critical leaders whose support is considered important for the push.
“I can tell you that the push is no longer a joke. The leaders are determined to give the party a new beginning following the failure of leadership we observed during the elections. We are united in the bid to ensure the party starts on a clean slate and the time has come,” a source close to the party said.
It was learnt that the initial plot was targeted at the national chairman but the renewed bid is said to encapsulate all National Working Committee members.
“The NWC has to give way for the new beginning,” said a party leader who told the Nigerian Tribune that the plan was to put in place a Caretaker Committee that would stay in office for two years.
The plan, according to sources, was to ensure that in two years, the Caretaker Committee would be able to resolve the teething problems the party encountered in the build up to the 2015 election and to stabilise the party in good time ahead the 2019 elections.
“Just like the APC benefitted from the implosion that took place in the PDP, the PDP must be ready to benefit from the expected implosions that would characterise the running of affairs by the APC.
“We want to be in a position to make the party attractive enough for those of our members who are currently sojourning in the APC. We know that close to the next general election, the euphoria would have died down and everyone would have seen the real issues.”
