North Korea’s Nuclear Threat ‘Most Dangerous Crisis We Face Today’ – United Nations

Unic Press UK: United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres unequivocally condemned recent nuclear and missile tests by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), denouncing them as “profoundly destabilizing for regional and international security.”

“Yet again, the DPRK has broken the global norm against nuclear test explosions. Yet again, the country has defied the Security Council and the international community. Yet again, the DPRK has needlessly and recklessly put millions of people at risk – including its own citizens already suffering drought, hunger and serious violations of their human rights… The most dangerous crisis we face today, [is] the crisis related to the nuclear risk in relation to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea”, Guterres said Tuesday at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Mr. Guterres recalled Security Council Resolution 2371, calling on the communist State’s national authorities to comply fully with its international obligations under Resolution 2371.

It was on 5th August 2017 that the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 2371, which imposed another round of sanctions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) in response to the country’s unbridled test of ballistic missiles, especially missiles of “intercontinental” range. In adopting Resolution 2371 (2017) under Article 41, Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, the 15-nation Council decided that:

  • “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea shall not supply, sell or transfer coal, iron, iron ore, seafood, lead and lead ore to other countries.”

Resolution 2371 (2017) also:

  • Placed a ban on cooperative entities or new joint ventures with North Korea entities or individuals.
  •  Prohibited all countries from increasing the total number of work authorizations for North Korean nationals in their jurisdictions, unless approved by the Security Council Committee established pursuant to Resolution 1718 (2006).
