Official: ISIS Leader Killed By U.S. Drone Strike In Afghanistan

CBS: A regional leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was killed last month in Afghanistan by a U.S. drone strike, an official confirms to CBS News national security correspondent David Martin.

According to a Pentagon spokesperson, the drone strike occurred around July 30, 2016. During the airstrike, Hafiz Saeed Khan, the ISIS leader in Afghanistan and Pakistan, was killed.

The statement from Deputy Press Secretary Gordon Trowbridge said the operation took place in the southern Nangarhar province.

“During this time, U.S. forces conducted an airstrike targeting Hafiz Sayed Khan…resulting in his death,” the statement read. “Khan’s death affects ISIL-K recruiting efforts and will disrupt ISIL-K’s operations in Afghanistan and the region.”
