FG To Spend N70mn On Independence Celebrations

ABUJA, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Federal Government has opted for a low-key celebration of the 55th independence anniversary celebration in view of the current economic realities in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved N70 million for the celebration that would kick off on Friday with Jumat prayers at 1.30 p.m. at the National Mosque, Abuja.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Babachir Lawal, briefed newsmen on Tuesday in Abuja on the activities lined up for the celebrations.

He said President Buhari approved four events to be observed in this year’s ceremony including Jumat prayer, interdenominational thanksgiving, ceremonial Change of Guards and a Children’s party.

Lawal also disclosed that President Buhari would address the nation on October 1st at 7.00 a.m., which would be followed by the ceremonial Change of Guards at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The SGF noted that the Federal Government opted for a low-key celebration because the current administration of President Buhari “appreciates the economic hardship that Nigerians and, indeed, the nation are confronted with today.”

He added that this was in consonance with the cost-saving policy direction of Buhari’s administration that emphasises on prudent management of resources.

He further disclosed that while the interdenominational thanksgiving service would hold on Sunday at the National Christian Worship Centre, the children’s party would hold Saturday at the State House.
