ABUJA, Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Federal High Court in Abuja has sacked the President of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Mr. Ugochinyere Ikenga, along with 22 other officers barely one month after they were elected into office.
The presiding judge, Justice Valentine Ashi, in his ruling over the weekend, annulled the congress and the election that produced the sacked executives on August 6. Justice Ashi also barred Ikenga from parading and the 22 others from themselves as officers of the youth body.
He removed them from office on the ground that the constitution of the NYCN was grossly violated by defendants in the court action that challenged the election.
Delivering judgment in a suit instituted by the Incorporated Trustees of the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) to challenge the NYCN congress that brought the officer to office, Justice Ashi held that their election of August 6 cannot stand in the face of the law in view of the brazen breach of the NYCN constitution on election matters.
