Yassi Island Renamed “Democracy And Liberties Island” To Mark 60th Anniversary Of First Coup D’etat

Unic Press UK: As Turkey marks the 60th anniversary of the first military coup in the country, the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Wednesday, renamed the Yassi Land, saying it would henceforth be known as the Democracy and Liberties Island, the Anadolu Agency reports.

President Erdogan said the first coup d’état in Turkey had put on trial the country’s history, culture, values, and beliefs.

In fact, it was not a trial but the murder of law by those who violated the constitution by orchestrating a coup and accusing the country’s legitimate rulers of violating the constitution. The main character of all coups and junta movements in our country is hostility towards the values and history of our nation. The evil of those who brought Menderes [the prime minister at the time] and his aides to the gallows and who supported these executions will never be forgotten.

In his address to the nation, Erdogan said that the Yassi Island would henceforth be known as the “Democracy and Liberties Island” to eternize the memories of Menderes and his aides. “I believe that Democracy and Liberties Island will be a symbol of Turkey’s future goals and the 60-year struggle for democracy,” he added.
