South East Governors’ Direct Houses Of Assembly To Enact Security Laws

24 May 2020. Voice of Nigeria: The South East Governors Forum has called on all south east states Houses of Assembly to commence the process of enacting security laws in line with the South East Joint Security Programme.

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Ebonyi state, Dave Umahi made the call at the end of their meeting held at the Lion Building, Enugu.

Umahi said that the recent communication from the Nigeria Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu to the governors of the south east regarding community policing composition was not keeping with the agreement they (governor’s) reached with the Nigeria number one police officer during his visit to the zone.

According to Umahi, “the south east governors and their leaders request the Inspector General of Police to revert to our initial agreement reached on community policing at Enugu”.

On re-jiging the economy, the south east governors said that they had agreed to set up committees in their various states to work with the Federal Government, World Bank, CBN in their various programmes lined up to rejig the economy, especially in the areas of Agriculture, SMEs and Solid minerals.

In a communiqué read by Umahi, the South East Governors agreed to hold a virtual meeting with the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC on the issue of linking the south east capitals with gas pipeline alongside with the pipeline programme of the Federal Government of Nigeria, which is running from Imo state to Lagos State.

The Forum however commended President Muhammadu Buhari, Minister of Aviation as well as the Minister of Works for the good work being done at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the second Niger bridge and expressed hope that they would soon be completed in no distances time.

The South East Governors directed all Igbos outside Igbo land to obey all extant COVID19 orders as the governors agreed to further engage the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to scale up testing of coronavirus in the South East states.
