I Don’t Have A Property Or Bank Account Oversees – Former President, Goodluck Jonathan

Unic Press UK: A former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has once again denounced the insinuation/allegation that he has properties abroad and maintains bank account(s) oversees.

In a statement in response that the news that the Nigerian government filed an application at a Federal Court in New York praying for a permission to subpoena information about transactions involving some Nigerians, including a former President Goodluck Jonathan, with regard to issues surrounding Nigeria’s breach of a contract it entered with Process and Industrial Developments Ltd (P&ID), the spokesman for Goodluck Jonathan, Ikechukwu Eze, said:

“Our attention has been drawn to international media reports to the effect that the Federal Government of Nigeria has subpoenaed bank records for former President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan in the United States of America. We aver that the Federal Government of Nigeria did not contact Dr. Jonathan or his wife before issuing these subpoenas. If they had, we would have advised them of the fact that you cannot subpoena what does not exist”, the Premium Times, NIgeria, reported.

Jonathan’s reaction relates to a report ‘Nigeria Seeks Bank Documents to Overturn $9.6 Billion P&ID Case’ Tuesday, in which, Bloomberg said the Nigerian government is trying to obtain documents from 10 banks, including Citigroup Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co., in a bid to overturn a $9.6 billion arbitration award related to a business deal that the country contends is shrouded in allegations of corruption; and Nigeria hopes a federal court in New York would grant permission to subpoena information about transactions involving government officials, including former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The $9.6 billion arbitration award in August 2019 is not payable to Process and Industrial Developments Ltd (P&ID), a UK-registered company with links to Dublin-based Industrial Consultants International, until Nigeria fully exhausts its legal battle, including the country’s ongoing appeal in the U.S. and UK courts.
