Moratorium On $365 Billion Debt Of African Countries Is Welcome – Macky Sall

Unic Press UK: Senegalese President, Macky Sall, has welcomed a moratorium on the $365 billion debt of African countries, but insists that the G 20 still has more to do in light of the need for greater global solidarity than the pursuit of profit.

During an interview with France 24 and RFI, President Sall reiterated his views that the G20 should make more far-reaching decisions, including cancellation of the debts of African countries as such a laudable measure, if implemented, would give Africans a deeper sense of belonging to the international community. Sall emphasized that his appeal is not beyond what the G20 has the capacity to do.

In a Communiqué Wednesday, 15 April 2020, the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors had agreed to: address debt vulnerabilities in low-income countries due to the COVID-19 pandemic; support a time-bound suspension of debt service payments for the poorest countries that request forbearance. The body welcomed the decisions by central banks to support global financial stability and resilience, including the deployment and expansion of bilateral swap lines and the introduction of repurchase (repo) facilities for sovereign debt.
