COVID-19: Nigerian Security Forces Accused Of Murdering 18 To Enforce Movement Restrictions

Unic Press UK: National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria has alleged that the Nigeria law enforcement agencies are responsible for the death 18 people, who died as a result of security forces use of force in handing violations of movement restrictions with regard to COVID-19 outbreak.

A report Wednesday, which the NHRC published Wednesday on its website, reads:

“There were 8 documented incidents of extra-judicial killing leading to 18 deaths. Out of this number, 12 deaths were recorded in Kaduna State. Abia State also recorded 2 deaths arising from 2 incidents; while Delta, Niger, Ebonyi and Katsina States recorded 1 death each. Whereas covid-19 has led to the death of about 11 patients to date (14/4/20), law enforcement agents have extrajudicially executed 18 persons to enforce the regulations. This speaks volumes of the protocols and rules of engagement for our law enforcement as well the efficiency level and capacity of law enforcement agents to deal with civil population. It’s a sheer display of impunity and reckless disregard for human life in law enforcement by security personnel.

The NHRC of Nigeria, which was established under the National Human Rights Commission Rights 1995 (as amended) in line with Resolution 48/134 of the United Nations General Assembly, said its findings covered the events from 30 March 2020 to 13 April 2020.

The findings are based on the audio/video recording by staff of the NHRC, Civil Society Organizations, and members of the public, who had responded to the Commission’s call for information on any action by security agents that violates human rights in the course of enforcing COVID-19 regulations.
