UK Setting Bad Example In Democratic Practice – Soyinka

Unic Press UK: The United Kingdom is setting a bad example by proroguing Parliament, says eminent scholar/writer Wole Soyinka.

Speaking to the BBC, Soyinka said the current situation in the UK is such that the Commonwealth needs to step in to call the UK leadership to order.

“I never thought I would live to see a prime minister prorogue parliament, I mean what is this, Oliver Cromwell come back? I think the fellow members of the Commonwealth should sit up and take note and examine the protocols of British associations and see whether Britain merits suspension from the Commonwealth for setting a bad example in democratic practice,” Mr Soyinka told BBC’s Newsday programme.

It was last week that the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Boris Johnson said that his administration would bring the current parliamentary session to an end; and cause a 2nd session of this Parliament to commence on Monday, the 14 October with a Queen’s Speech.

The UK government says its move to suspend the Parliamentary creates space for “a fresh domestic programme” given the recent change of government and a new prime minister. But, the Labour Party’s leader, Jeremy Corbyn has been alleging that the Prime Minister is avoiding a scrutiny of his Brexit plans.
