Saudi Arabia Convenes Extraordinary Summit Of The Arab League Over Crisis In Middle East

Unic Press UK: The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is convening an extraordinary summit of the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) over the alarming tensions in the Middle East, the official news agency of Saudi Arabia (Saudi Press Agency) reports.

The summit seems timely/pertinent at this time of heightened tensions between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. At this moment, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock carrying U.S. Marines, the USS Arlington and a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln and several other combat-ready military equipment and personnel have been stationed near Iran by the U.S. Central Command.

The summit, which is scheduled to hold in Mecca on May 30, 2019, would be an official platform to discuss the enormous challenges facing the Middle East, particularly the tensions between the United States, allies of the U.S. and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Also to be discussed are the ramifications in the event that the tensions further escalates into a war.

This month, the KSA has faced increasing sabotage of its national interests. In one case Tuesday, the Yemeni armed forces and its allies attacked Saudi Aramco – the national petroleum and natural gas company of Saudi Arabia – using an attack drone, thereby causing damage and forcing a temporary shutdown in operations as the strike had violated a major oil pipeline that provides an alternative export corridor to the Strait of Hormuz. In another alarming situation, two oil tankers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were among four oil tankers ‘mysteriously’ damaged on May 12, 2019 near the territorial waters of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Gulf of Oman, east of Fujairah.

According to the Yemeni news agency, the Yemeni government has expressed support over the extraordinary summit initiated by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, which aims at promoting regional and international peace and security.
