Nigeria Election 2019: Buhari Denounce El-Rufai’s “Body Bag” Threat

Unic Press UK: The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians, the General Election 2019 observers, and all foreigners in Nigeria that his government will do whatever it takes to ensure their protection and safety.

Speaking during a live broadcast Thursday, February 14, the Nigerian leader said:

“Let me at this point, reaffirm the commitment of the Federal Government to the conduct of free and fair elections in a safe and peaceful atmosphere. Just yesterday, I signed the Peace Accord alongside 72 other presidential candidates.

I want to assure all Nigerians, the diplomatic community and all foreign election observers of their safety and full protection. Any comments or threats of intimidation from any source do not represent the position of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

As Government has a critical role in maintaining the democratic traditions, so do citizens. I therefore urge you all, as good Nigerians, to take a personal interest in promoting and maintaining peace in your respective neighbourhoods during the elections. This is certainly not a time to allow personal, religious, sectional or party interests to drive us to desperation.”

President Buhari added that his government is committed to conducting a credible election, and urged Nigerians to carry out their civic duty by voting during the General Election 2019.

It was on February 6 that an All Progressives Congress (APC) apparatchik and Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai issued threats with regard to the Nigeria General Election 2019 saying: “For anyone to come and intervene in Nigeria, we are waiting for the person that will come and intervene. They will go back in body bags. Because nobody will come to Nigeria and tell us how to run our country. We have got our independence and we are trying to run our country as decently as possible and we know the history of those countries that are trying to teach us these things. We have read there history…”

Nigeria General Election 2019 would hold on Saturday, the 16th February 2019, from 08:00 AM (Lagos time).
