Rivers APC Cannot Field Candidates In General Election 2019 – Supreme Court

Unic Press UK: The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not eligible to field candidates during the National Assembly Election on February 16, and the Governorship and State House of Assembly Elections on March 2, the apex court of the land Supreme Court of Nigeria ruled Friday.

In its ruling Friday, Judge Mohammed Dattijo leading a 5-man team of Justices of the Supreme Court (JSC) did set aside a ruling of the Court of Appeal, thereby agreeing with the decision of Judge Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is barred from recognizing any of the All Progressives Congress (APC) members that are seeking to vie for an elective office in Rivers States with regard to the House of Assembly, Governorship, House of Representatives and Senatorial elections during the Nigeria General Election 2019.

The crisis in the Rivers State chapter of the APC has its roots in the party’s primaries in the state – both the direct and indirect primaries – that was held by two factions of the party. One of the factions is led by the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Ameachi and the other is under the direction of Senator Magnus Abe (APC – Rivers South East).

Nigeria General Election 2019 would hold on Saturday, the 16th February 2019, from 08:00 A M (Lagos time).
