CJN, Onnoghen Absent At Code Of Conduct Tribunal, Trial Adjourned

Unic Press UK: The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Judge Walter Onnoghen was not at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) today to face a six-count charge bothering on asset declaration, though he was represented by a team of over 100 lawyers led by Wole Olanikpekun SAN.

The case, which was mentioned at about 10:00 am, was adjourned to January 14, 2019 within 1 hour of hearing, with the CCT chairman ruling that the Judge Walter Onnoghen, the current head of the judicial arm of the Nigerian government, must appear in person to answer the charges against him.

Prior to the hearing at the CCT, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the South-South Governors’ Forum had weighed in, calling on the Nigerian government to abide by the rule of law.

In a press statement, the NBA president, Paul Usoro SAN said that a case against a judicial officer must, at the first instance, be reported to and handled by the National Judicial Council (“NJC”) pursuant to the provisions of our laws. While the South-South Governors’ Forum called on the CJN to ignore this so-called Court summon from the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) and reject the provocative call for his resignation.
