UK Prime Minister, Theresa May Won Confidence Vote

Unic Press UK: The United Kingdom Prime Minister, Theresa May today won a confidence vote given the outcome of a secret ballot involving 317 Members of Parliament (MPs) under the Conservative Party.

She garnered 200 votes, which is circa 63% of the total votes.

117 [or 36%] of Tory MPs voted against the Prime Minister.

Speaking at Downing Street after the result was announced by the Chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Stuart Brady, Mrs May said:

“I am pleased to have received the backing of my colleagues in tonight’s ballot. Whilst I am grateful for that support, a significant number of colleagues did cast a vote against me and I have listened to what they said.”

A confidence vote was organized after 48 Tory MPs wrote to the 1922 Committee chair, seeking to cause a leadership challenge within the Conservative Party.

May is facing scathing opposition in Parliament over a deal reached by her government and the European Union (EU) on the terms and conditions for the UK’s planned exit from the EU. A majority of the MPs across party lines has condemned the deal.
