Nigeria General Election 2019: Anambra Governor, Willie Obiano Denies Supporting Buhari

Unic Press UK: The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano has denied the news being peddled by a few media outfits that he has been canvassing for the reelection of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), an excerpt from a statement issued in the state’s capital city Awka by the Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C-Don Adinuba, reads:

“As the 2019 general election approaches, it is interesting how various politicians and political parties have been swooping on Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State in the belief that his role will be critical in deciding who wins the presidential vote. For instance, operatives of two of the leading political parties in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, have taken to the media to create the impression that the governor had endorsed their candidates in the forthcoming election. Some have even gone as far as reproducing a video of an event which took place in 2014 in a bid to give the impression that the event had just occurred. Governor Obiano is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the All Progressive Grand Alliance. He is also the APGA National Leader. These positions place heavy responsibilities on his shoulders. Therefore, any talk about him endorsing the presidential candidate of another party, let alone joining another party, is wishful thinking.”

Obiano succeeded the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Vice Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, as the Anambra State governor. Many seem to argue that since Obiano belongs to a party that isn’t a strong force in the forthcoming Presidential Election, he should weigh in and support his predecessor, Obi, who is eminently qualified and commands enormous goodwill and respect of Nigerians from all walks of life.

Nigeria General Election 2019 would hold on Saturday, 16 February 2019, from 08:00 hrs (Lagos time).
