South China Sea: Chinese Govt. Urges United States To Stop Making Waves

Unic Press UK: The People’s Republic of China has reiterated its opposition the United States actions, which it claims are undermining the sovereignty and security interests of the littoral countries in the South China Sea under the guise of “freedom of navigation and overflight”.

China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, Hua Chunying who spoke at a press briefing, reacted to the position of the United States Vice President Mike Penc that the South China Sea “doesn’t belong to any one nation, and the United States will continue to sail and fly wherever international law allows,” said:

“We have long said that freedom of navigation and overflight in the South China Sea has never encountered any problem. . . May I trouble you to remind the U.S. relevant individual that the United States has yet to ratify the United Nations Law of the Sea Convention (UNCLOS). . .If the US side can at an early date ratify and abide by UNCLOS, then I think this will benefit even more the protection of peace and stability in the South China Sea,” the Global Times reported.

China has strategic interests in the South China Sea, where its claims sovereignty over a number of islands. But the United States disagrees, arguing that its mission in the disputed islands is backed by “Freedom of Navigation and Overflight” and that the South China Sea doesn’t belong to any one nation.

There has been several unpleasant encounters between the Chinese forces and the U.S. forces. In one instance in October 2018, a U.S. military warship collided with a Chinese destroyer.
