Nigeria Labour Congress Rejects Governors’ ₦22,500 Minimum Wage

Unic Press UK: A proposal by the state governors’ for a minimum wage of ₦22,500 has been turned down by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The position of the workers’ union was announced by the NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, as he addressed journalists. Wabba accused the governors’ of breaching the agreement that had been reached by a tripartite committee. He said:

“Each of the six governors represented six geopolitical zones. It is important to note that National Minimum Wage is not an allocation to workers. The unilateral pronouncement by  governors of ₦22,500 minimum wage is an abuse of every known principle of industrial relations, labour laws, processes and international best practices,” the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

A few weeks ago the Nigeria Labour Congress had insisted on a minimum sum of ₦30,000 as a new monthly minimum wage, saying that its decision was based on the recommendations of the Tripartite National Minimum Wage Committee.
