Court Freezes INEC Bank Account Over Judgement Debt

Unic Press UK: Judge John Tsoho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, has issued an order freezing the bank accounts of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) operates in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

In freezing the accounts and compelling the Federal Ministry of Finance to withhold INEC’s money in its custody, the court took into consideration a garnishee application filed by Bedding Holdings Limited with regard to a  ₦17 billion January 28, 2018 judgment against INEC, the Nigeria Lawyer said on its website.

The court adjourned to November 8, when the CBN and the Federal Ministry of Finance are expected to convince the court on why the garnishee order application should not be made absolute.

In the event that the garnishee order nisi is made absolute in the course of the court proceedings, then the third party garnishee – the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Ministry of Finance – who are in possession of monies belonging to the judgment debtor INEC, would be compelled to pay the judgment creditor immediately.
